Privacy Policy

This page explains what personal information The Napping Sloth (thenappingsloth.co.uk) collects, why, and what your rights are. I’ve tried to keep it short and plain.

Who I am

The Napping Sloth is a personal blog written by Jake. I’m the data controller for personal information collected through this site. You can contact me about anything on this page at hello@thenappingsloth.co.uk.

What I collect and why

If you subscribe to the newsletter I collect your email address so I can send you new posts. This is handled by Jetpack Newsletter (run by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com). The legal basis is your consent, and you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email.

If you leave a comment The comment form collects your name, email address and comment, plus your IP address and browser details to help detect spam. Your email address is never shown publicly. Comments are checked by Akismet (Automattic), which receives your comment and details to decide whether it’s spam. If you tick the box to follow replies, wpDiscuz uses your email to notify you, and every notification includes a way to stop them. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in running a comment section and keeping it free of spam.

An anonymised string created from your email address (a “hash”) may be sent to Gravatar (Automattic) to show your profile picture if you have one. Comments and their details are kept unless you ask me to remove them.

When you visit the site

  • Jetpack Stats records anonymised visit information (such as pages viewed and how you arrived) so I can see which posts are useful.
  • Jetpack Likes, sharing buttons, Related Posts and the image CDN are provided by Automattic and may process technical information such as your IP address to work.
  • Security tools (Really Simple Security and Limit Login Attempts Reloaded) log IP addresses of failed login attempts to protect the site. These logs are kept only as long as needed for security.

The legal basis for these is my legitimate interest in running a secure, working website, or your consent where cookies are involved (see below).

Cookies

This site uses cookies and similar technologies. Cookiebot (by Usercentrics) shows a banner so you can choose which non-essential cookies to allow, and records your choice. You can change your choice at any time using the cookie settings link on this site. The full, automatically updated list of cookies is below.

Embedded content

Posts may include embedded content (for example videos or social posts). Embedded content behaves as if you had visited the other website, and that site may collect data about you under its own privacy policy.

Who your information is shared with

I don’t sell your data or share it for advertising. It’s processed only by the service providers listed above (Automattic for Jetpack, Akismet and Gravatar; Usercentrics for Cookiebot; and my web host) to run the site. Some of these providers may process data outside the UK; where they do, they state in their own privacy policies the safeguards they use.

How long I keep it

  • Newsletter: until you unsubscribe.
  • Comments: until you ask me to remove them, or I remove the comment.
  • Security logs: for as long as the security tools need them, usually a short period.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for a copy of your personal information, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how it’s used, and to withdraw consent at any time. Email hello@thenappingsloth.co.uk and I’ll respond within one month.

If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk), though I’d appreciate the chance to put it right first.

Changes

If this policy changes, I’ll update the date at the top of this page.
